Bayview Woods-Steeles is on the Northeast side of North York Toronto, neighboring Markham city. The community is divided by densely wooded trees and is best known for its scenic nature trails along the Don River and German Mills Creek.

Community Overview

The community of Bayview Woods-Steeles runs from Leslie Road on the East to Finch Avenue in the south, Bayview Avenue on the West, and Steeles Avenue in the north. The community has large swathes of green space, allowing easy access to nature. Residents can enjoy many outdoor activities in local parks and hiking trails that follow the Don River and German Mills Creek flow.

1. Housing:

Bayview Woods-Steeles North York was subdivided for a massive residential real estate development in the 1950s, with most properties built between 1960 and 1980. Bungalow, back-split, and side-split detached homes sitting on generously sized lots are prevalent. Many elder houses have been gradually rebuilt into custom-built modern homes. At the heart of Bayview Woods-Steeles, a new residential project Ivy Hall led by Countrywide Homes, a well-respected homebuilder, has a unique collection of 30 palatial homes along Lonergan Crescent and Ballyconnor Court. Each home sits on a 60-foot lot with over 4000 sq ft interior space. Semi-Detached houses and condo townhouses are mainly concentrated on the community's west side along the Go Train railway. There are also small numbers of condominium buildings and rental apartments close to Bayview Avenue to provide additional housing options for residents. At the intersection of Leslie and Finch, there is also social housing apartment supervised by Toronto Community Housing Corporation.

3. Transportation:

Around 32% of residents travel by public transit. Several buses furnished by Toronto Transit Commission and York Region Transit operate through the community. Old Cummer Go Station, located east of the community close to Leslie Street, presents passengers with an alternative method to journey to Union Station in roughly 30 minutes by Go Train. Near Highway 404, car commuters can quickly get on the highway via entries from Steeles Avenue and Finch Avenue. Furthermore, Highway 401 is less than a few km away from the community.

4. Recreation:

The German Mills Creek and the Don River meander through the community, which provide a scenic ravine backdrop for several local parks. Bayview Park, Ruddington Park, Garnier Park, and Cummer Park offer kids' playgrounds, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, and tennis courts. The Upper Don Recreational Trail is a 9km hiking trail popular for walking, running, and cycling. At the intersection of Leslie Street and Cummer Avenue is Cummer Park Community Centre, a comprehensive large community center with an indoor swimming pool, an ice hockey rink, outdoor tennis courts, a baseball field, a squash court, and a basketball court.

5. Shopping:

Restaurants, banks, and many shops are spread over community borders. At Bayview Avenue and Cummer Avenue, Bayview-Cummer Shopping Centre is a small shopping center featuring restaurants, Banks, and service stores. A Loblaw supermarket can also be found nearby the shopping center. On the southeast corner, Finch & Leslie Square plaza is a small shopping area at Leslie Street and Finch Avenue, which offers a Chinese supermarket, CIBC bank, restaurants, and service shops. Another favorite shopping place for residents is Bayview Village Shopping Centre, an indoor shopping mall containing over 110 stores.

6. Schools:

Steeleview Public School and Pineway Public School are two elementary schools serving students from GK to grade 5. Zion Heights Middle School admits students from Grade 6 to Grade 8. For high school, located at Leslie and Steeles Avenue, AY Jackson Secondary School accepts students in the community. AY Jackson School ranks top 52 over 700 high schools in Ontario. The school offers AP courses and gifted classes. The school accepts international students, so there are students from all over the world.
