Thornlea is the home of one of the best Ontario high schools, St. Robert Catholic School, in Markham. It is a beautiful community with almost half of the land covered by dense forest and green space.

Community Overview

Thornlea community runs from German Creek on the west to the Railway track on the south, Highway 404 on the east, and Highway 407 on the North. The community has many beautiful parks and hiking trails. Though the neighbourhood is generally quiet, it is notable that housing too close to Highway 404, 407, Don Mills Road and Railway track will experience noise levels.

1. Housing:

Real Estate stocks are very uniform in Thornlea Markham, with the majority of Double garage detached houses. Many houses sit on a generous lot with more extensive land, mainly constructed in the 1980s. It is tough to rent a place here as home ownership is close to 100%.

From MLS listings, in the past 90 days, Thornlea Markham sold 6 detached houses on average of $2,049,667.

2. Demographic:

It has a higher than average Chinese population living in Thornlea Markham. Other prevalent ethnic groups include Indian, Polish, Russian and Persian. Residents tend to be older, with the median age over 50, higher than the Ontario average.

3. Transportation:

Cars are the primary source of transportation for local residences. It takes a very short drive to the entry of highway 407 and highway 404. The bus routes exist on Leslie and Green Ln. The bus is not frequent but can bring the commuter to North York, Vaughan or Richmond Hill.

4. Recreation:

Huntington Park is the largest park in the community. It has a section for dog lovers to off-leash their dogs. Together with five other neighbourhood parks, they offer residents hiking trails, soccer fields, a baseball diamond and a kids playground. Thornhill Golf Centers is at the northeast corner side by St. Robert school.

5. Shopping:

There is no shopping area inside this community. Residents need to drive to the neighbouring community to buy groceries. Fortunately, the area north of Highway 407 to Highway 7 concentrates on many shops and restaurants.

6. Schools:

There is no elementary school inside the Thornlea community. Students east of Leslie will attend neighbourhood Bayview Fairways Public School and west to Bayview Glen Public School. Both are top Ontario schools in terms of academic performance.

Thornlea Secondary School is zoned for the community, consistently ranking around the top 15% in Ontario. Thornlea school provides both French Immersion and AP programs to students. Children can also attend St. Robert Catholic High School in the North East Corner community. The School was established in 1975 and currently has about 1,700 students. St. Robert Catholic Public High School offers students special programs such as the IB International Baccalaureate, ESL and Aviation Technology programs. St. Robert's High School has scored very high in provincial examinations over the past several years and repeatedly ranked in the top 20 of more than 700 schools in Ontario.
