Cornell

Cornell is a fantastic planned community in the eastern part of Markham that has become a beacon of diversity and communal living. Its unique history and layout have helped shape a community perfect for families, young couples, and professionals. The area was designed with families in mind, with many parks, recreational facilities, and excellent schools scattered throughout the community.

Community Overview

Located in the northeast part of Markham, Cornell is bounded by Highway 407, Ninth Line, Donald Cousens Parkway, and Reesor Road. The area is mainly bordered by farmland and the Rouge River Valley, making it a natural and serene place to call home. The community's roots are surprisingly enjoyable, with its name derived from William Cornell, a Rhode Island resident related to the founder of Cornell University, Ezra Cornell.

1. Housing:

In terms of housing, Cornell features mostly town, semi-detached, or detached houses with garage parking spaces at the rear, creating an aesthetically pleasing streetscape free of parked cars. Additionally, many houses feature detached garages with laneway access, providing extra space and the potential for rental income.

From MLS listings, in the past 90 days, Cornell Markham sold 19 detached houses on average of $1,474,309; 42 Attached town home, Semi-detached and Link houses on average of $1,190,745; 11 Town homes on average of $875,982; 6 condos on average of $755,415.

2. Demographic:

Families with children comprise a significant portion of the community, with 63% of households containing children. Additionally, 49% of residents in this neighborhood are first-generation immigrants, while 32% are second-generation immigrants, contributing to the community's diversity.

3. Transportation:

Cornell is a well-connected neighborhood with easy access to highways, public transportation, and cycling paths. The community borders Highway 407 in the south, making it easy for drivers to connect to major highways and travel to other parts of the GTA. However, the distance to Highway 404 may make it less convenient to travel to downtown Toronto by car. For those who prefer public transportation, the closest GO Train station is Markham GO, which is about 15 minutes away by car. The station provides regular service to downtown Toronto and other parts of the GTA. YRT/Viva buses also operate in the area, with several routes connecting to nearby communities and transit hubs.

4. Recreation:

Parks and recreational facilities are abundant in Cornell, with 17 parks and 45 recreational facilities. Benjamin Marr Park, Upper Cornell Park, and Grand Cornell Park are just a few parks offering amenities such as playgrounds, splash pads, and skating rinks. The Cornell Community Centre is another hub for community activities and is a great place to stay active, learn, and socialize. The Centre boasts a modern library, state-of-the-art fitness facilities, and a multi-purpose gymnasium. Cornell is also home to various businesses catering to community needs, mainly located on Bur Oak Avenue. The Cornell Community Centre is the hub for many community groups and projects, and its most used facilities are an indoor track, recreation hall, and pool. Furthermore, it's worth noting that the community's experiment in 'smart growth' and 'new urbanism' has resulted in a sustainable community with excellent transport links and amenities.

5. Shopping:

Cornell residents are well-served by a range of shopping options, with everything from small businesses and specialty shops to larger retail venues. Bur Oak Avenue is the heart of the neighborhood's shopping district, offering a variety of retail stores and medical clinics, as well as the Cornell Community Centre. The Main Street Markham shopping district, just a short drive south on Markham Road, features charming architecture, sidewalk cafes, and a variety of unique shops and boutiques. CF Markville on Highway 7 features a wide range of retail and big-box stores for those seeking larger shopping venues.

Cornell residents have access to excellent healthcare facilities besides shopping. The Markham Stouffville Hospital is conveniently located across the southern border, providing top-quality care to the community. Whether residents seek routine check-ups or more serious medical care, the hospital is a vital resource.

6. Schools:

Cornell has a fantastic selection of schools, with eight public schools and 5 Catholic schools serving the neighborhood. These schools offer special programs, including Advanced Placement and French Immersion. Notably, there are three elementary schools - Cornell Village School, Rouge Park Public School, and Little Rouge Public School - and one high school - Bill Hogarth Secondary - all excellent institutions.

Lastly, Cornell is considered a safe and secure community, with many wellness clinics and the Markham Stouffville hospital conveniently across the southern border. Cornell is an excellent neighborhood with great homes, parks, schools, and amenities, making it an excellent place for anyone seeking a diverse and communal living experience.
