Westminster-Branson

Westminster-Branson is on the North end of North York Toronto, neighboring Lakeview Estates community in Vaughan. The community is divided by Westminster Cemetery, with the North called Westminster, also known as Fisherville, and the South named Branson.

Community Overview

Westminster-Branson runs from Bathurst Street on the East to Steeles Avenue on the North. The western border follows the meandering course of the West Don River down to the community south point connecting with Bathurst Street. Westminster-Branson is a highly diversified community; the mother tone of around 70% of residents is not in English.

1. Housing:

This part of North York has a higher than average population density, and high-rise apartment buildings predominate the real estate. Detached bungalows, split-level, and 2-story homes are the majority of low-rise houses, but semi-detached and condo townhouses are also ubiquitous throughout the community. These houses in the neighborhood are of varied construction, reflecting a staggering development process. About 56% of housing was completed between 1961 and 1980, and another 30% was constructed between 1981 and 2000. The roads in many parts of the community are narrow and comparatively straight. It is very straightforward for the renters to find a suitable living option in this community; around 60% of residents rent here, much higher than the Toronto average.

2. Demographic:

About 52% of the residents are of European Origin and 31% are of East and Southeast Asia origin. Westminster-Branson is home to a sizeable Jewish community, many from Russia, Poland, Ukraine, or Israel. The neighborhood along Bathurst is known for its Russian populace, with a large Russian Jewish population. The area is also sometimes referred to as Little Moscow. Filipino, the most significant visible minority, scatters across the community. Other ethnic groups include Chinese, Korean, Persian, Romanian, and Indian.

3. Transportation:

Around 44% of residents travel by public transit, higher than Toronto's average. Just a few bus stops away, Finch bus terminal, located at Yonge and Finch, offers 10 TTC bus lines, 11 YRT bus lines, and 19 GO bus lines. Furthermore, the Nearby Finch subway station connects the central transit system to downtown Toronto. In about 10 minutes, Car commuters can drive onto Allen Road, a local highway connecting to highway 401.

4. Recreation:

Forming a portion of the Don Valley ravine system, G Ross Lord Park and West Don Parklands have some of the most beautiful scenery in North York. Both Parks present four walking trails, such as Hidden Trail, Finch Corridor Recreation Trail, G Ross Park Loop, and West Don Parkland Path, with walking distances ranging from 2.9km to 18.2km. These parks also offer several soccer fields, kids' playgrounds, and a dog park. Another outdoor sports facility is Esther Shiner Stadium, which provides an excellent facility with a beautiful turf field for both soccer and football. Located at the southeast point of the community is Posserman Jewish Community Center, possessing state-of-the-art facilities, including indoor/outdoor saltwater swimming pools, indoor/outdoor basketball courts and running tracks, an indoor theater, outdoor kids' playgrounds, and a fitness center. The North York Centennial Centre, located at Finch Avenue, is an indoor ice arena for skating and ice hockey games.

5. Shopping:

Westminster-Branson is not a particularly convenient place for shopping. The Main Exchange plaza, Bathurst Steeles Mall, and Townsgate Centre plazas are located in the neighborhood community at the intersection of Bathurst and Steeles. They offer Metro Supermarket, FreshCo Supermarket, several restaurants, Banks, and service stores. Some other small plazas are also available along Bathurst Street near Cedarcroft blvd and Finch Avenue.

6. Schools:

Rockford Public School accepts elementary students in the Westminster area. Yorkview Public School covers most Branson area, and Wilmington Elementary School intakes students from the rest of the community. Middle school students will go to Fisherville Senior Public School and Willowdale Middle School. Two high schools admit students from grades 9 to 12, Newtonbrook Secondary School and Northview Heights Secondary School.
